What We Test

Three tests. One exam. Your CDL.

The CDL skills exam has three parts. We administer all three using the same Nebraska DMV standards and scoring criteria.

Pre-Trip Inspection

Vehicle inspection including in-cab check and external pre-trip of the entire vehicle. You will identify and explain key components and safety items.

Basic Control Skills

Maneuvering exercises including straight-line backing, offset backing, and parallel parking. Tests your ability to control the vehicle in tight spaces.

Road Test

On-road driving test on a pre-approved route. Evaluates your driving skills, alertness, awareness, lane changes, turns, and overall safe driving ability.

Questions about 3rd party CDL testing

What is 3rd party CDL testing?
3rd party CDL testing allows Nebraska-certified examiners to administer the official CDL skills test instead of the DMV. The test is exactly the same, but you get faster scheduling, shorter wait times, and a more convenient testing experience. Your CDL is still issued by the Nebraska DMV. We just administer the skills test portion.
Is the test the same as the DMV test?
Yes. 3rd party examiners use the exact same standards, test routes, and scoring criteria as the DMV. The result goes on your official Nebraska driving record and is recognized by all 50 states.
What do I need before I can test?
You need: (1) A valid Commercial Learner Permit (CLP), (2) Proof of completing ELDT training, or an ELDT exemption if you held a CDL before February 2022, (3) A vehicle that matches the CDL class you are testing for. If you do not have ELDT yet, we can help. IWS Trucking offers ELDT-compliant training programs.
Do I need to bring my own truck?
You can use your own truck or ours. If you bring your own, it must match the CDL class you are testing for (Class A: truck and trailer exceeding 26,001 lbs total GVWR with trailer at least 10,000 lbs). If you need a vehicle, we can provide one for an additional fee. Call (402) 694-2776 to arrange.
How fast can I schedule my test?
Most tests are scheduled within 48 hours. DMV wait times can be 2 to 6 weeks. We offer flexible scheduling including weekends. Call us at (402) 694-2776 for current availability.
What does it cost?
CDL skills test: $300 with your own truck/trailer, $500 with our truck/trailer. Retests are $100 per section. We accept cash, check, and card. Call (402) 694-2776 to schedule.
What if I fail a part of the test?
If you fail one part of the skills exam, you only need to retake that specific part, not all three. We will help you understand what to work on so you can pass on your next attempt. Retest scheduling is typically within a few days.
What if I need CDL training, not just testing?
We can help with both. IWS Trucking offers ELDT-compliant CDL training for Class A and Class B at our Aurora, NE location. Training takes 2-5 weeks, with student housing available for out-of-state students. Visit our training page or call (402) 694-2776 to learn more.
